After entertaining a capacity crowd at Mighty Mighty (RIP) last February, Brian Shimkovitz is bringing his Awesome Tapes From Africa cassette tape DJ set back to Wellington for a rare performance at San Fran. Armed with a suitcase full of highlife, fuji, benga, tsonga disco, soukous, hip-hop, rhumba and ethio-soul cassette tapes sourced on trips traveling across the African continent, his DJ sets epitomize the fun and vibrant spirit at the heart of any great party.
Brian started the Awesome Tapes From Africa MP3 blog in 2006 to help promote the breadth of musical subcultures he discovered while traveling throughout the continent. Since 2011 he’s also run Awesome Tapes From Africa as a record label, reissuing cult records from the likes of Bola, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia, Penny Penny, Aby Ngana Diop and next month, the legendary Ata Kak.
Show starts 9.30pm, local support from DJ’s Dam G (early set) and Croque Madame (late set). Awesome Tapes From Africa onstage from 10.30pm-12.30pm.
Door sales only. $10 General. $5 Students.
