Join NZ's hardest traveling, hardest working string band and National treasures (-NZ Herald & Radio NZ) The Eastern, as they drag the bones they've carried through eight years and over 1000 shows up to the stage for one final swing and swig in their hometown of Christchurch before they take a well deserved holiday from the road, from the life and of course from each other.
It's never been easy deciding to make a living playing music and basing yourself almost as far away from any 'industry' structures as you can get but this city has kept them inspired, fired and rolling over the past 8 years. And although since the formation of the band they've played all over the world, there ain't ever any place like home. And while peers and friends alike take the guitars and usually set up shop in bigger, flashier places that thinking has never really suited The Eastern or their mission. They look around and feel proud to click their heels amongst the streets and people of their hometown. Thus they decided, that if they were gonna take a well earned and well needed break they should at least try and tear up the rooves of the city with one last heave. So thus they crack the knuckles, duct tape the guitars and decide to put on a show, for free, for all comers, in the as yet untried but damn pretty looking 'Gustav's' in the New/Old Tannery buildings in Woolston. It's something of a home coming for the band as pre the great 'do up', which has seen the old sector spring to love and life, they recorded some of their third album 'Hope and Wire' behind its brick facades.
Promising over two hours of explosive folk, fury, fun and thunder, they'll be playing songs from all four of their critically acclaimed albums including last years 'The Territory' described by the Otago Daily times as ...a triumph and by No Depression (USA) as one of the meatiest albums of the year, by any band from any country.
The show is free with doors from 7pm and they'll be ably supported by fellow Christchurch artist Lil' Chuck, who releases his debut album this month. His Delta infused western swing flavoured one man band machine will guarantee a hot start to the night and promises to keep The Eastern on their toes.
