Gig Information

Two masters musicians in conversation bring you ‘Modern Maps On Ancient Ground’ . A performance of Afro latino rhythms and grooves from a decade of study and life as a drummer in Lima ,Coastal Peru meeting a new and original voice in taonga puoro. Looping instruments of stone, bone, shell and wood, every performance is a highly concentrated conversation between past and present - a very personal exploration of the spiritual and healing qualities of an ancient practise. Powerful, magical, intentional.

Go back a few years to 2012 with Rob Thorne on his travels in the Peruvian Amazon to research and experience ancient indigenous sound-healing techniques, on his return to civilisation Lima bustling metropolis one of South America’s largest cities and contact via facebook followed by a meeting with a kiwi drummer Steve Cournane a resident of this region for over a decade . Now Dunedin’s chance to see what this melding of their music brings with a one off show in support of Maori language week and its culture ..Dunedin Public Art Gallery Sat August 1st 8pm . Cash door sales $15

Rob Thorne (Ngati Tumutumu) A musician with over 25 years performance experience in bands and solo, predominantly within alternative rock, free noise, experimental, and improvisational sound art, his work since 2001 with traditional Maori musical instruments has seen him recently complete an MA in Social Anthropology, and in the last 5 years incorporate this diverse experience to create long, beautifully transcendent, ambient compositions using loops, intelligently blending the modern with the ancient.

Steve Cournane ( Rimu Southland ) Drummer, joined Alpaca Brothers in Dunedin 1984, recorded on Flying Nun. Later with Weetbix Boys and Verlaines. Involved in formation of Yellow Eye Music1990 with Simon Vare. Studied jazz in Wellington 1993-95, made a living as a musician in Wellington, formed CLBOB, an original jazz group which toured the country extensively and won a Tui for jazz album of the year in 2001 for album Stereoscope.
