It would be easy to think that when a young man leaves the shores of home for the bigger world outside and then finds himself availed of every door opening with attention and praise lavished upon him, it would be easier to forget the exact place where he started his journey. That may be true for some but not for Lyttelton songwriter Marlon Williams who returns home this December for one small and special show.
After selling out the rebuilt Theatre Royal in Christchurch earlier this year and being poised at the precipice of all conquering world attention it is a surprise and a gift to see Marlon’s next show in Christchurch being a small fundraising show in a smaller venue.
Hoping to use his growing celebrity for good, the show will serve as a fundraiser and bucket filler for Lyttelton Theatre group The Loons Theatre Trust as they attempt to reach a fundraising target in order to provide the finishing touches to their new purpose built space inside the soon to be completed Lyttelton Main School.
The Loons have been one of the iconic faces of the vibrant Lyttleton arts community, however since the Canterbury earthquakes they have been a family in search of a home. With the energy and drive of the cast, director Mike Friend and writer Joe Bennett, The Loons, against all odds, have kept the fire burning in the wilderness over the past few years and are excited about the opportunities their new space will provide for them and the community.
After four years of heart, sweat and fundraising they can see the top of the mountain and are certain this December’s show by Marlon will be the push they need to reach the peak.
The show will be held in one of Christchurch’s newest and most exciting music venues; Gustav’s (which has already seen sell out shows by The Warratahs, The Eastern and Delaney Davidson) on December 23rd as an early Christmas present for fans of both Marlon and The Loons.
The night will be an intimate and beautiful evening, which will showcase Marlon solo, highlighting the voice that has wowed so many and his growing reputation as a crafter of songs. As the show will be seated capacity is strictly limited. Also in order to meet the deadline of The Loons fundraising campaign tickets will only be on sale until October 31st. This is sure to be a highlight of the summer, it is for a good and true cause, and may be one of the few chances left to catch Marlon before the world snatches him up.
