Gig Information

From Chicago to Auckland, we are so proud and excited to host Auckland’s first international footwork party, with none other than the inventor of footwork himself:

RP BOO (Planet Mu // Hyperdub // TEKLIFE // On The Sly)

Support from:
- Surly
- JRed
- Milo B
- Ma Bec
- AWDJ (Chicago house set)

$15 earlybirds/$25 tickets from Dash tickets

At around 160bpm, footwork is a fast, frenetic, abstract evolution of house music from Chicago, Illinois, that combines ghetto-tech’s minimalism and fast beats with big sub-bass and chopped-up samples. Footwork has only recently started to be recognised in the bass music world, though it’s been around for over a decade.

RP BOO (Planet Mu/Hyperdub/Teklife/Arpebu/On The Sly) came up in the juke scene (itself a child of Chicago house) on the Southside of Chicago as a dancer and producer in the 90s. He was a part of the legendary Chicago dance crew House-O-Matics, which DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn joined not too long after, but decided to focus on making and playing music with the crew.

RP grew in popularity as a DJ, recorded mixtapes, and party goers developed the fast dance style to accompany his music, birthing the name footwork. His 1997 Wu Tang cut Baby Come On is widely regarded to be the first footwork track.

Since the release of Planet Mu’s 2010 Bangs & Works compilation, the rest of the world has started paying attention to footwork, and RP Boo is finally being recognised as the inventor he is. 2013 saw both the release of his first full-length album “Legacy” and his European DJ debut, and last year’s album “Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints” was listed on several 2015 best track and album lists, including Thump, Mixmag, Playboy and Rolling Stone magazine.

After his show at the Adelaide Festival of Arts 2016, RP Boo will be gracing us with his presence for his only New Zealand show!

“RP Boo is a master of oddness! His music takes you somewhere you need to be. FREE!! His style, his breaks, his beats, his rhythms, his flow of music style cannot be robbed. It cannot be copied… it can only be played. Five things to know about RP: God Lover, humble spirit, educator/mentor, loves to smile, and never stops perfecting his music. Freedom with drum-machines!!”

SURLY is the footwork-inspired alias of New Zealand’s own Scott Detail. His tracks are currently getting heat from international players, including the LA collective Juke Bounce Werk and DJs from Japan’s Booty Tune label. He’ll be showcasing all his own music in his set so Auckland can see what all the fuss is about! https://soundcloud.com/surlynz

JRED is Auckland’s own OG of footwork. JRed has been playing and making footwork since before most of us had even heard of it! Catching the ear of Ghettophiles label bosses, his sets are always diverse and unpredictable, but expect more than a few dubs!
