Audio Foundation is pleased to announce a performance by the extraordinary violinist Chris Prosser (Wellington) and a new suite of music by Jonathan Besser.

Chris Prosser is one of the unsung heroes of New Zealand music. A journeyman musician, Chris has lived in Hamilton, Christchurch and Wellington and spent much of the 1990’s living in London where he survived by busking in the underground. In this period he amassed an incredible repertoire of original compositions for solo violin and performed with the London Musicians Collective and roots/rock band ‘The Eclectics’. Upon his return to NZ Chris has continued his prolific output, collaborating with dancers, free improvisers and large ensembles. His latest work sees him add the voice as an instrument alongside his virtuosic violin.

Well known Auckland based composer/pianist Jonathan Besser presents a new suite composed for piano, violin and viola – Gimel Suite 7. He is joined by Violinist Miranda Adams who was for many years the Associate Concert Master for the Auckland Philharmonia orchestra and Violist Robert Ashworth who is currently the principal Violist in the Auckland Philharmonia. Gimel Music is wildly romantic, energetically sad tuneful music. All the suites in Bessers Gimel series have one thing in common Three. Gimel is the third letter in ancient Hebrew Alphabet. It is Bessers intention to approach composing all the Gimel music conceptually, using the number three as his guiding musical form (bringing three to the fore).

Chris Prosser – Drink Violin
Musician drinks his violin and sings about it

Chris Prosser’s latest project is ‘Drink Violin’. It involves imbibing the violin as he plays and vocalizing with it. Some songs are ditties in English. Others use made-up words and vocal effects like whistling. All the tunes are original and the intention is to enhance each melody with spontaneous and hypnotic singing.
This is an ongoing project which started with ‘Solo Chris’- four performances at the NZ Fringe Festival in Wellington earlier this year. It is an unusual and individualistic form of music theatre.

Gimel Suite 7 (2016)
World Premier
New Music by Jonathan Besser
Performed by Miranda Adams - Violin
Robert Ashworth - Viola
and Jonathan Besser - Piano

This is a truly special evening of new music by musicians who have performed and collaborated together over many years. Chris Prosser and Jonathan played around Wellington and toured NZ in the mid eighties, releasing two L.P records of experimental Violin and Piano Music.
