Bazurka are a collective of Wellington musicians, coming together to present their modern take on balkan gypsy and folk music. Intricate and exotic melodies, driving rhythms and tear jerking ballads are all on the menu as this seven piece powerhouse present some of the best music to come out of Serbia, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and more. They have played recently at CubaDupa and the Newtown Festival, and play regularly at live music venues around Wellington.
The ensemble feaures drummer Thomas Friggens who is a creative and versatile musician. He has performed with Strike, Brockaflower, and The Balkanistas, as well as DJ-ing and producing under the moniker DJ Fruju.
Bassist Jacqui Nyman is an excellent funk, afro, and latin groove bass player. She has played in many Wellington groups including C-26, Phantasticus, East Harlem Schmackdown
Guitarist Justin Firefly Clarke’s musical prowess is diverse, and in his guitar playing there is influence from jazz, classical music, the Balkans, India, and Ethiopia. He is a recognized face in the NZ music scene and has collaborated with musicians from around the world.
Saxophonist Jake Baxendale is an eclectic saxophone player and composer. He plays and writes music for many Wellington bands including The Jac, The Troubles, JB3, and The Richter City Rebels.
Tristan Carter, violin, is a brilliant violinist and travel junkie, having just completed a six month journey that took him from India to Edinburgh. Tristan plays with Wellington bands The Troubles, Hypnos, as well as the recent production of The Wine Project by Circa Theatre.
Michael Costeloe, trumpet, is an adept trumpet player. He has performed with The Wellington City Shake-'Em-On Downers, Tunes Of I, and The Balkanistas.
Briar Prastiti, vocals. has recently completed her Masters in composition at Victoria University. She is an accomplished singer, and has performed with Hypnos and The Balkanistas.
