I would like to tell you about Virtuoso Strings and our Free, Fun, Family concerts in the South Island this month.
The Virtuoso Strings Orchestra is run on a volunteer basis, and provides free lessons, instruments, uniforms, food, transport, tours, concerts, etc. etc. to students in the low-decile Eastern suburbs of Porirua, who would not otherwise have the chance to learn to play a string instrument.
After operating for only five years, we usually have over 100 kids at our weekly rehearsals, and several students have already achieved their Grade 8 Trinity College exams.
Around 45 performers from the Virtuoso Strings are embarking on an eight-day, six-concert tour of the South Island, starting with a concert in The Piano in Christchurch on Friday the 13th of July at 7pm.
Entry is free, but a Koha is much appreciated! The tour is free to the students from Porirua, and we rely on Grants and Donations to fund it.
Music in the concerts range from Vivaldi's Spring and Elgar's Cello Concerto to Tangos, Beatles tunes, and even a Shostakovich string quartet! Families welcome!
NB: ARROWTOWN VENUE IS INCORRECT – this website won't let me list the correct venue: THE ATHENAEUM HALL
