Here's Five: Dan Melchior

Wednesday 10th February, 2016 2:04PM

The ever eclectic Dan Melchior has landed on New Zealand soil for three shows, kicking off tomorrow evening at Chick's Hotel in Dunedin, heading to Auckland on Friday, and winding up in Wellington on Saturday. The whirlwind tour is supported by sonic adventurer Kraus at all dates, and a strong lot of local support acts has been assigned for each city. UnderTheRadar dropped a line to longtime fan Andrew Tolley aka Mr Slackjaw, who is on the Auckland bill, and asked him to share some of his favourite Melchior tunes with us. Check out what Tolley whipped up, and see below for full tour details....

I cannot even remember when I gots clued up to this man's multiple releases, I know I first got hipped via his association with Billy Childish, a collaborative LP or two with the man and also with Holly Golightly put him on my map... then the steady stream of albums from the back end of the nineties thru the noughties and not letting the pedal of the metal into the 20-teens.. with wry witty and wacky lyrics chained to all manner of crunchy fuzzy guitar riffs and associated breakdown analogue noise.

I've got a double LP and maybe six other vinyl long players and probably a dozen singles but he's spat out easily double that, probably more... I hear Robyn Hitchcock and the Soft Boys, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, the Kinks, the Troggs, the Rutles, Wreckless Eric, a smattering of the Fall and of course the Medway garage of Billy Childish. A whole heap of anglo-skewered, compulsive observational lyrical ramblings....and hooks you don't quite see coming, and then wham!, yr ears have been requisitioned indefinitely...here's a buncha yootoobage...
