Stream Peach Milk's Debut EP 'Finally' (UTR Preview)

Thursday 28th July, 2016 6:00PM

One of our favourite acts to emerge so far this year is Peach Milk, an Auckland-based electronic producer who first caught our attention with her brilliant remix of Aaliyah's 1996 single '4 Page Letter'. But luckily for us she's been diligently working on a whole EP's worth of material which we are thrilled to be able to preview this evening, ahead of tomorrow's official release. Stream Finally below while you read our interview with Peach Milk...

Hey Peach Milk! First up, can you tell us a little bit about how you started making electronic music?

I played a bit of keyboard from a young age but never had any lessons or anything like that. My dad is an avid gear collector and seller, so there was always something interesting like a wacky drum machine or synth to have a play on. Then at the beginning of high school, my friend gave me a cracked copy of Fruity Loops and I started to play around trying to make beats on my desktop PC and MIDI keyboard. I used that for a year or two before moving onto Ableton and trying to incorporate more hardware into the music I was making.

What made you choose the name Peach Milk to play under?

I don't really have much of a reason for it, but when I was asked to play Chronophonium this year by a friend who was curating one of the stages... I didn't have a name for my current project. I just sort of came up with it, and thought that it creates a very interesting mental image and aesthetic. Super sweet and creamy in combination with a strange, fuzzy texture. Then I was like, 'Well I guess that sorta sounds like my music?' I had to come up with something super quick and I was unsure about it at first, but now it's stuck and I really like it! It suits.

Your remix ‘Four Page Letter’ is amazing and has been hugely popular - gaining some great radio play. What made you tackle that song?

Thanks! I had a good feeling about it. The original is such a beautiful song! (R.I.P. Aaliyah), also it is something like 80 bpm. Bringing it up to 120 completely changed the vibe. There is something about the combination of house music and a powerful R&B vocal that just works so well together. There are so many amazing old house bangers that have that in common, so this would be my take on that.

How did you go about the writing and recording process for this EP?

The EP is called 'Finally'... The title is pretty self-explanatory. Some of the songs are 2-3 years old, and I basically wanted to showcase some of my older stuff as well as the newer direction that my music has gone in. I've been making music solo from my bedroom for a long time now but never showed anyone apart from a couple friends. Most of the songs are quite dark and were made in a shitty period of my life, so by including them in my first EP, it's an emotional release being able to put them out there for others to listen to and interpret.

What’s next for Peach Milk?

I have some new music brewing at the moment and I am planning a full-length release for this coming summer, along with hopefully a tour around NZ to follow. I am planning on having quite a few features/collabs on the record too, so stay tuned!

Peach Milk is celebrating the release of 'Finally' with a show this Friday 29th July at the Whammy Backroom in Auckland, where she will be joined by A Libra Baby, Pocari Sweat, Mongo Skato and more. Head over here for details.
