Video: The Beths - Lying In The Sun (UTR Premiere)

Wednesday 10th August, 2016 12:26PM

Despite its title The Beths' single 'Lying In The Sun' is not exactly the archetypal summer song. The indie-pop cut, which sits at the end of the Auckland group's recently released Warm Blood EP, sees frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes reflecting on some big changes on her life and the small things that gave her comfort - a mood perfectly encapsulated in this video directed by Dahnu Graham of Beach Pigs. Take a look at the clip and then read our wee interview with Liz below...

Earlier this year you guys released a great video for EP opener ‘Whatever’, and now you’ve got a clip for the EP 's closing song. What made you chose this track as the next to tackle visually?

It felt like the natural next song. Ideally we would have put it out in summer but that is feeling a long way away at the moment. I quite like that it was last on the EP, because a lot of people who listen online don't make it to the end for whatever reason. Not everyone listens to things from front to back, it's 2016 there is NO TIME. So it feels a bit like a secret song.

Who did you work with to direct this clip and where was it shot?

Dahnu Graham, from Beach Pigs, directed it. We wanted something less structured and little more candid for this video, which is one of Dahnu's strengths. Dahnu really recommended working with Declan, as he just keeps the camera rolling and kind of disappears, which made us feel relaxed. And Georgia Schofield is a genius at working a drone. We shot out at Bethells Beach and at the quarry nearby, that they are in the process of turning into a park.

The visual representation of being on a obviously freezing beach fits well with the song’s theme. What was the inspiration behind the lyrics?

I wrote the song after a summer where I had some big changes in my life and I was just really surprised and touched by how supportive and lovely my friends were. For some reason it coincided with the first time I "got" going to go the beach. Something about being in the ocean, especially at night, just made me feel really calm, which it never used to. The result was a lot of midnight swims with friends, which I look back on fondly.

Sand in the bed, really??

I'd often fall into bed in the early hours after a swim without a proper rinse and wake up with sand everywhere. Don't tell my mum...

The Beths are celebrating their new video with a joint release party with Sea Views this Friday 12th August at Whammy Bar/Wine Cellar with support from their friends Heavy, Eyes No Eyes, Siobhan Leilani, and Wax Chattels. Head over here for more information.
