Listen: Aporia - Jupiter's Gold Coast (UTR Premiere)

Thursday 8th September, 2016 11:45AM

Mitchell James aka Aporia relocated from Auckland to Berlin earlier this year, and since the move he's been working away on his second EP, Almost Tropical. With the EP almost ready to drop James is sharing the gorgeous new single 'Jupiter's Gold Coast' which follows earlier offering 'Stereo Moon'. Soak up the track below while you read our chat with James about the upcoming EP...

You (semi) recently relocated to Berlin... what influenced you to move, and what impact has it had on your music?

Berlin is a good place to be if you want to make things. You don’t have to work so much to get by and there is a lot to do and see all the time. I think it has impacted the music in a way which I’m not sure I can comment on yet, it’s still unfolding. I do feel very comfortable here.

This single ‘Jupiter’s Gold Coast’ has a really warm, almost-tropical sound. What kind of head space were you in writing the track?

I made this track when my father was unwell before he passed away. I wanted to make something positive and light-hearted in response to that. Something also that reflected my Dad’s personality. New Zealand summer and memories I have of growing up at the beach are also tied in there. A song kind of about taking a weight off and accepting things as they come. There’s always a bigger fish to fry.

Does the title reference anything in particular?

Haha yes, the title is a name of a casino on the Gold Coast of Australia called ‘Jupiter’s’. I remember seeing the casino when I was younger and being taken with it aesthetically. It gives me an image of a pink filtered tropical beach on a distant planet, once I imagined that I knew I could make it sound like that.

The track is part of an upcoming EP, can you tell us a bit about that? How did it all come together?

All the songs were recorded in my bedroom, ‘the aquarium’ in Berlin. Some parts were tracked at a studio space called Malzfabrik, which we use for Full Moon Fiasco, but 95% in my bedroom. The whole EP has this almost tropical/ underwater vibe going, hence the title. A lot of influence from Japanese Anime and PS1 / Sega fantasy games. My good friend Takumi, who has been a long time Aporia contributor, did the 'Stereo Moon' remix and I think it’s one of my favourite things on the EP.

Almost Tropical will be released via Prison Tapes amd Fantasy Fiction later this month. Tropical Single Release Party at 8mm Berlin on the 15th September, doors from 10pm
