PRESS RELEASE:

On Friday the 17th of February at Meow, Los Angeles electro hip-hop pioneer The Egyptian Lover will make his live debut in Wellington in a very special double bill with Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa cassette tape DJ set extravaganza.

From humble beginnings as a DJ with Uncle Jamms Army at the L.A Sports Arena in the early 80s, Egyptian Lover has stood the test of time, in the process becoming one of the most iconic figures associated with West Coast electro hip-hop. Building on 80s party anthems like ‘Egypt Egypt,' ‘My House (on the Nile)’ and ‘Girls,' over the last decade, his electrifying stage show and his mastery of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, have seen him become a festival favourite throughout Europe, Asia and Australasia. Following the release of his excellent 1983–1988 compilation album on Stones Throw and a show-stealing performance in Auckland last year, we’re extremely excited to welcome Egyptian Lover to Wellington for the first time.

Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz's Awesome Tapes From Africa blog and record label has been shedding light on obscure and wonderful sounds from across the continent. As a DJ, he delivers extended sets blending folkloric pop, leftfield dancefloor gems and hip-hop bangers he's collected on African marketplace finds. Traveling from club to festival to DIY space, Awesome Tapes From Africa cassette tape DJ sets celebrate the music and musicians whose cassettes Shimkovitz has collected over the years with an analog-anchored agility not heard or seen anywhere else. A regular visitor to New Zealand since 2013, this special event will mark Brian’s third appearance in the capital.

Awesome Tapes From Africa is also making an appearance at Summer In The Square in Auckland along with Motte and New Dawn on 18th February. Head over here for more information.

Also announcing a Splore sideshow is Copenhagen DJ Courtesy, who will be joined by Keepsakes, DJ Kush Boogie and Jaded Ninties Raver. More details and tickets over here.
