PRESS RELEASE:

“Acid Mothers Temple have singlehandedly rebirthed rock in a cartoon riot of hair and fuzz.” - The Wire, 2001

The Audio Foundation is very pleased to announce two New Zealand shows for the greatest psychedelic rock band on the planet - Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso UFO from Japan!

Like a band out of time, Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO distill cosmic influences into a deluge of psychedelia, distortion and pure rock n roll ecstasy – a miasmic orchestra that transposes the pothead pixie ethos of Gong and the alien shock of Hawkwind into primordial realms, where free improvisation meets adrenaline-charged electricity and rock reconnects with the freakout tradition.

The sprawling universe of Acid Mothers Temple was formed in 1995 by Kawabata Makoto, dubbed by the Wire in 2001 as “one of the great post-Hendrix blood and fire guitarists”. In the 20+ years since, AMT have simultaneously reinvigorated rock music while redefining what the idiom should and could be.

With over two decades of mind bending, idiom-exploding activity and a discography of over one hundred releases (not to mention the numerous solo and side-project releases which encompass everything from drone, acid-folk, acapella, to minimalist composition), AMT are an experimental rock institution: a fervent exclamation that the countercultural freedom which dominated the late 60s is still very much alive and kicking.

For two shows in Aotearoa, Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO will feature founders Kawabata and Higashi, long term member Tabata, plus the monumentally thuggish rhythm section of Sakamoto and Uchida.
