Premiere: Alae Unveil New Single 'From 1 To 3' Along With Striking Clip

Thursday 10th August, 2017 2:48PM

Poised to embark on a nationwide tour later this month, folk-inspired indie outfit Alae have lifted the lid on their eagerly-anticipated single 'From 1 To 3'. The Auckland group, which has recently expanded from a duo to a three-piece, have unveiled the catchy single as the first taster from their forthcoming debut album that is slated for release in the new year. The release of 'From 1 To 3' is also marked with a video directed by long-time collaborator Mikee Carpinter who utilised simple block colours and silhouettes to visually capture the dark and light elements of the tune. Elaborating on the single and its accompanying clip, bandmember Alex Farrell-Davey told UTR in an email:

"Our new song 'From 1 to 3' is really about being aware of yourself, and how you are no more or less important than anything, or anyone else. The realisation that because you don't really matter, neither does anyone else, nor their perceptions or opinions of you. Rather than letting that be a negative thing, I find a sort of enlightenment in it."

"This was our first time working with a producer. I think we had the classic hypothetical worries as any band does, in the sense that we didn't want to lose our 'sound'. After spending half a day with Jol Mulholland, everything started to come together - we were and are still really happy with Jol's production. I think it's a good fit because he genuinely listened to our influences and he helped us to emulate the sounds we could hear, but not identify."

"With the video we wanted to make something that wasn’t so narrative based as our last one for 'Things Change’. The concept was fairly basic; to create a interesting performance piece using heavy block colours and projecting our art work from the EP and singles onto us while we are playing. It was also a chance to show the full band for the first time since our drummer Jayden Lee joined. We have now done 15 videos with just the two of us it was really nice to show off the band for the first time."
