Live Photos: The XX - Trusts Arena, Auckland

British indie-pop sweethearts The xx made their triumphant return to Aotearoa last night at Waitakere’s Trusts Arena. The show highlighted their ability to seamlessly blend guitar driven tracks into electronic dance bangers with beat-master Jamie xx switching effortlessly between finger drumming, triggers and a tom-thumping on a transparent kit.

The electronic elements became increasingly pronounced throughout their hour-plus set, peaking in hype with an exhilarating build into Jamie xx’s remix of the trio’s smash hit ‘On Hold’ as his bandmates Romy Croft and Oliver Sim darted offstage, to return a few moments later in a flawless transition to the original rendition. The crowd was left to cool off with Croft’s solemn vocal tones in tear-jerking show closer ‘Angels’, as the beautiful refrain of 'As in love with you as I am' echoed through the stadium.
