Contenders + Unsanitary Napkin Unleash Split Collection

Contenders + Unsanitary Napkin Unleash Split Collection

C.C. / Friday 25th October, 2019 9:51AM

Two of Aotearoa's most furious punk groups have joined forces for a split release, showcasing the explosive sonics of Kirikiriroa / Hamilton's Contenders and Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington's Unsanitary Napkin, featuring a fistful of frenzied tracks from both bands. Fronted by vocal powerhouse Cilla Kinnaird, Contenders bust out four new anthems including an on-point cover of LA proto-punks The Screamers' spooky classic '122 Hours Of Fear', perfectly timed for Halloween with bonus synth provided by Thom Burton (Wilberforces). Unsanitary Napkin shake listeners out of their stupor with five absolutely flooring tracks, directing their laser-like withering gaze at "free speech" supporting transphobes and racists in 'Big Freedom', NZ naval officer Commodore Alfred Keating's not so secret public toilet-filming activities in 'Commodore Keating (Who Sees You Excreting)' and celebrating the heroism of dildo-throwing activist Josie Butler with lead track 'Dildo Baggins' – which drummer Ben Knight says "has a sample of the slapping sound of the dildo hitting Steven Joyce’s face... if you listen closely!"

It all comes adorned with glorious artwork combining the considerable talents of Daily Secretion (Unsanitary Napkin singer / guitarist Hannah Salmon) and Alex Kinnaird of Contenders, depicting Steven Joyce's iconic moment and a psychedelic reimagining of Gary Panter's iconic Screamers logo, respectively. You can catch both groups tearing it up tonight at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammyfest, together at Pōneke's Valhalla on Saturday, and grip your own limited edition cassette copy of Contenders / Unsanitary Napkin via the artists' Bandcamp pages...
