Lineup Announced For Loud And Proud Queer Music Festival

Lineup Announced For Loud And Proud Queer Music Festival

Annabel Kean / Friday 31st January, 2020 1:25PM

The Auckland Pride Festival is officially upon us tomorrow for two glorious weeks, with oodles of events lined up celebrating Tāmaki Makaurau's LGBTQIA community and (literally) shining a spotlight on our diverse and oh-so talented family of musicians, artists and performers. Amongst the Pride flag workshops, pickleball tournaments and kikis, one of our personal favourites is the Loud and Proud Queer Music Festival taking over of the Audio Foundation.

Promising "analog instruments, screeching guitars, soulful waiata, balloon-infused pop bangers, crushing drones and more", the festival showcases some of Aotearoa's most exciting, boundary-pushing queer and trans musicians, including local favourites Ary Jansen, Moody.v And The Menstrual Cycle, Roy Irwin and Whaea And The Rumble. Historically at the forefront of musical movements and innovation, LGBTQIA artists are a crucial facet in our unique experimental music scene. Last year we asked Kiki Van Newtown of Giantess (fka Hex) to have a chat with the organisers about making space for "queer musicians who don’t make the type of music that garners mainstream success," which you can read here. Add the festival to your Auckland Pride schedule and snap up your ticket via the link...

Press release:

Queer music is as fluid and diverse as the community it comes from. Join us for a showcase of Auckland’s experimental and underground LGBTQIA musicians that revels fully in this diversity!

Expect handmade analog instruments, screeching guitars, soulful waiata, balloon-infused pop bangers, crushing drones, and more. Anything goes in this experimental free for all, and we can’t wait to blow you away.

While queer and trans people have been at the forefront of so many burgeoning musical movements across history, from disco, to rock & roll, to experimental harsh noise, queer musicians find themselves sidelined from two directions – on the one hand for their identity, and on the other hand for the uncompromising nature of their art. Auckland’s music scene is rich with diverse performers that have long been disconnected from the mainstream queer community due to the experimental nature of their art.

We are proud to showcase the best queer performers in the experimental music and noise category in association with Auckland Pride Festival.

We are showcasing a hand-picked selection of Auckland’s best experimental, underground, and “out-there” LGBTQIA musicians, across the spectrums of gender, sexuality, and genre, including:

Ary Jansen
Babyteeth
Baby Zionov
Deb 5000
Lesbian Death Sluts From Hell
Moody.v and the Menstrual Cycle
Nah Bo
Nightmare Honey
Ragged Veins
Ro RG
Roy Irwin
Whaea and the Rumble
