The Leers Unveil New Album 'The Only Way Out Is In'

Sounding ready to take on the world, Mt Maunganui's The Leers brush away any potential sophomore record jitters with their assured new eight song collection The Only Way Out Is In. Presenting six fresh tunes plus recent singles 'This Love It Holds' and 'Nightcall', the long player was laid down over two weeks late last year in Los Angeles at Mad Muse studio, recorded on an SSL 8000 G+ console formerly owned by Dr Dre (!) and mixed by their US label In Flight Music Group's head honcho Matt Salazar. Balancing open-hearted guitar-pop sparkle with hefty grooves and more than a hint of rock n roll swagger, The Only Way Out Is In also delivers something of a sly curveball with a stadium-scale cover of French synthwave icon Kavinsky's dreamy Drive soundtrack anthem 'Nightcall'. With their record finally out in their relatively Covid-free homeland (touch wood), The Leers are toasting its long-awaited launch with summer festival performances at Rhythm & Vines, Electric Avenue and Soundsplash, along with Tauranga New Years Eve shindig Kaleidoscope [tickets available here].

Lead singer Matt Bidois shared his excitement about how far The Leers have come with their latest record: “It was incredibly eye-opening. Going from a shed on a farm where we write all of our music, to a world-class studio with endless amounts of incredibly expensive equipment humbled us in a lot of ways. It changed our focus from “parts” of music that we create to how those parts sound and how changing that sound can really add or take away from the song. It sounds obvious saying it out loud, but the endless options working at Mad Muse presented really put into perspective how little we scratch the sonic surface as artists which is super exciting. Like find a new room in your house you didn’t know was there.”

'The Only Way Out Is In' is out digitally via major streaming platforms.
