London trio black midi tap a rich vein of math / post-rock on their ambitious second album Cavalcade. Digging their nails deep into the soil of aural weirdness, black midi sound intensely focussed yet up for anything on the new eight song collection — lobbing an ever-changing array of sound shapes at listeners with a creative glee recalling to these ears such innovative units as Deerhoof, Hella, Fantômas, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 or even (dare I say it) Sun City Girls. Even more impressive is that despite all the disparate elements at play (hinted at by the mind-melting cover artwork), the team of Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson stick the landing, serving up a diverse, sometimes theatrical and always engaging sound of their very own.
