Hiatus Kaiyote Drop Single 'Chivalry Is Not Dead'

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 9th June, 2021 1:30PM

Now's the time to sharpen up those manners, because Melbourne's Hiatus Kaiyote have declared 'Chivalry Is Not Dead' with the vibey latest single from their forthcoming new record Mood Valiant. Sounding primed to get your body moving, singer Nai Palm and the gang tackle the topic of courtly rituals of a different kind, specifically "the bizarre mating rituals of leopard slugs" (they turn fluorescent) and seahorses (they lock tails and dance)" — so no need to throw your jacket on a muddy puddle whenever someone gets the urge to board a coach then. Mood Valiant drops in late July via Brainfeeder (founded by Flying Lotus), ahead of the genre-bending crew's return to Aotearoa for two shows this coming September.

Nai Palm unpacked the origins of the song: “After we did Choose Your Weapon, we had to make radio edits of our songs, and all of our shit is like 6 or 7 minutes long! So ‘Chivalry’ was me fucking with the ‘hit record’ formula. I’m gonna write a song that's 3:40 long, and it’s about sex, but I’m gonna make it fucking weird. Examples from the natural world that are fucking with the status quo.”
