Best Bets Drop Single 'King Cnut'

Chris Cudby / Friday 8th April, 2022 12:26PM

Rangiora power-pop tunesmiths Best Bets have unveiled a brand new ripper drawing parallels between the apocryphal tale of King Cnut and issues confronting our contemporary age. Not in fact a cover of David Thomas and The Wooden Birds' sprightly 1987 avant-pop number 'King Knut' but an all-original composition, Best Bets remind us of the 11th century King of England's humble lesson to his courtiers, who demonstrated the limits of secular power via the futility of 'trying to stop the tide' — famously declaring on the sea shore "Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws." Placing the tale in a present day context of "ever-growing climate anxiety, and a family illness," Best Bets launch their debut album On An Unhistoric Night in late April...

'On An Unhistoric Night' launches on Friday 29th April on vinyl via Meritorio Records (US / EU / UK) and Melted Ice Cream (rest of world).
