Alex Cameron Returning To New Zealand In December

Chris Cudby / Monday 29th August, 2022 11:00AM

Last here in Aotearoa 24 hours before the pandemic closed our borders in March 2020, Australian sensation Alex Cameron has announced his imminent return, performing with six-piece band including saxophonist and collaborator Roy Molloy this December in Auckland and Wellington. Globally beloved for a marathon run of big-hearted and lyrically daring crooning hits including 'Candy May', 'Stranger's Kiss' (with Angel Olsen), 'Politic Of Love' and 'Runnin' Outta Luck', Cameron's new album Oxy Music ditches earlier themes of hyper-masculine self-critique for an earnest interrogation of "addiction, mental health, and love" — created in response to the ongoing opioid addiction crisis in the US. Fans of world-class showmanship, huge tunes and exceptional stage banter know exactly where they need to be when Cameron, Molloy and their merry crew finally hit our shores again this summer, grip the official details below...

“The album is a story, a work of fiction, mostly from the perspective of a man... Starved of meaningful purpose, confused about the state of the world, and in dire need of a reason to live.” — Alex Cameron

Press release:

He’s a songwriter par excellence, conceptual and authentic and one of music’s most exciting artists. I OH YOU and Frontier Touring announce the return of Alex Cameron, touring Australia and New Zealand in November 2022 for his first shows down under in two years, in support of his latest acclaimed studio album, Oxy Music – out now via Secretly Canadian.

The effortlessly catchy synth-pop star and his six-piece live band – including sax player and collaborator Roy Molloy – will perform six headline performances in Fremantle, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Wellington and Auckland. Cameron’s previous, pre-pandemic headline tour in March 2020 saw shows quickly sell out, venues upgrading due to demand (also conveniently wrapping up 24 hours before AU/NZ borders closed.)

Initially inspired by Nico Walker’s Cherry, Cameron’s latest opus (released in March 2022) is his response to the mass opioid addiction which has swept America, a musical questioning of topics such as addiction, mental health, and love, mythical stories told in Cameron’s genre-busting glory. Brighter and more buoyant than his previous LPs – 2014 debut Jumping The Shark, 2017’s Forced Witness, and 2019’s Miami Memory – Cameron has dropped the laconic, hypermasculine role-playing of his earlier solo releases for a place of optimism, stories told in the way that only he can tell.
