Winner of the Best Independent Debut Award for their breakout 2021 album The Licking of A Tangerine, Jazmine Mary has shared 'Seagull', the lead single / video from the Aotearoa songwriter's just-announced forthcoming album DogJoined by Elizabeth Stokes (The Beths) on trumpet, J.Y. Lee (Yoko-Zuna, Avondale Bowling Club) on flute, Dave Khan (Reb Fountain) and Courtney Rodgers, Jazmine’s Mary’s new song is a poignant medley of piano and strings produced by Peter Ruddell (Sulfate) — supported by stirring lyrics alluding to themes of grief and love. Co-directed by the artist and Annabel Kean (Sports Team), and made with support from NZ On Air, the striking accompanying clip takes place within a monochrome landscape, with Jazmine Mary joined by two muscular figures who strike a myriad of slow-moving poses under the tender movement direction of Kyah Dove (co-founder of Auckland’s only queer strip club Body Haus).

“I love them. Majestic birds. They get a very very very hard time from people don’t they? It’s got nothing to do with them. All they did was be a seabird. That’s all they did. All they ever did was be a bird by the sea, and then we went and put cities around them and then got mad at them for being in the cities.”

'Dog' is launching on Friday 2nd June.
