AudioCulture 10th Birthday + Classic NZ Album Readers Poll 2023

AudioCulture 10th Birthday + Classic NZ Album Readers Poll 2023

Chris Cudby / Monday 1st May, 2023 12:17PM

Aotearoa's indispensable font of local music knowledge (we refer to it every day), AudioCulture Iwi Waiata are celebrating their tenth birthday as our official noisy library of New Zealand music (Te pātaka korihi o ngā puoro o Aotearoa). Providing a crucial document of our gloriously diverse aural history, with more than 2000 pages published thus far (including over 1000 artist profiles), AudioCulture was founded in 2013 with the express aim to "tell the stories of nearly one hundred years of New Zealand popular music culture" — celebrating "the people who have created the music, the scenes they shaped, and the audiences they played to", in collaboration with artists, historians, industry experts and community members. Happy birthday AudioCulture and thanks for the invaluable work! We're looking forward to the next ten years of hugely informative profiles and features.

In celebration of their birthday and in perfect sync with the start of Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa / NZ Music Month, AudioCulture have launched the AudioCulture Classic NZ Album Readers Poll — inviting local music buffs across the nation (that's you) to declare "which locally recorded and produced album you consider to be the very best of all time". Have your say and you could be in to win a Thorens TC201 turntable and $500 credit at Real Groovy, plus there'll be spot prizes throughout May.

Choose wisely HERE (the winner will be announced on 31st May) and read the official details below..

"To mark 10 years of celebrating Aotearoa New Zealand music, and in a first for the website, AudioCulture will launch the AudioCulture Classic NZ Album Readers Poll for 2023 on Monday 1 May. It’s time for you, the public, to tell us which locally recorded and produced album you consider to be the very best of all time.

Aotearoa is teeming with award-winning, chart-topping and critically acclaimed albums worthy of consideration. Or perhaps your idea of classic is something a little more seminal? All voters who cast their vote go into the draw to win a Thorens TC201 turntable and $500 credit to spend, thanks to our friends at Real Groovy. There will also be spot prizes of exclusive AudioCulture merch to be won over the month. *Terms and Conditions apply.

Head to audioculture.co.nz to tell us which classic NZ album reigns supreme. Voting is open from 10am Monday 1st May, and throughout NZ Music Month. The number one voted album, and winner of the Real Groovy prize pack, will be announced on Wednesday 31 May.

AudioCulture Iwi Waiata is an online celebration of the people who have created the music, the scenes they shaped and the audiences they played to. We collaborate with artists, historians and the music industry to tell the stories of over 100 years of New Zealand popular music culture.

On the site you’ll find stories, profiles, regional story and venue maps, timelines covering specific genres, chart hits from the 1960s to 2000, and a new section of resources for New Zealand’s highly valued music educators.

AudioCulture is managed by the Digital Media Trust and made with funding from NZ On Air."
