D.C. Maxwell is ready to let his spirit run free in Lone Rider, the Tāmaki Makaurau songwriter's ten-track debut album galloping out the gates on 18th August through US imprint Danger Collective. The alt-pop troubadour today unveils his new record's title track and accompanying video, peeling back the layers of grief over a lost friend in the lonesome wake of choosing to keep on for oneself. In Jack O-Neil’s directorial debut, the ‘Lone Rider’ clip offers a rightfully bare blend of a rural Kiwi landscape with the outlaw Americana sounds of the upcoming album, where Maxwell serenades a horse in the native plains of West Auckland while wielding only a guitar and his vocal pipes. I admired the contrasting slow-mo of the running horse behind an unfazed Maxwell in his moment of sorrow. The natural connection between Maxwell and horse Dee that O’Neil captures was facilitated by horse trainer Adrian Stent (Power of the Dog, Slow West, Mulan), whose work hones in on the deep bond two beings can have — perhaps forevermore.

Maxwell will be riding out on a two-stop Aotearoa tour to celebrate his album release at Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s San Fran and Tāmaki Makaurau’s St. Mary’s-in-Holy Trinity (playing the latter date with string section and band), with a triple race across the ditch in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. “This song is about the choice you have to make when someone you love chooses to leave this world. Do you stay on without them? Do you wallow in grief? Or do you choose to carry on, keeping them alive through the love you continue to hold for them in your heart? I think choosing to continue to exist while your heart is broken is noble, but god does it hurt. I wanted this song to acknowledge that choice, and the people all over the world that make it every day.” — D.C. Maxwell
