Listen To i.e. crazy's New Album 'Country Justice'

Six years in the making and drip-fed with advance singles which very much felt like standalone works in themselves, Tāmaki Makaurau songwriter / producer Frances Libeau aka i.e. crazy has unveiled their second studio album Country Justice. Speaking this morning with 95bFM Breakfast host Rachel Ashby, i.e. crazy discussed the numerous thematic elements examined on Country Justice — digging up discomforting truths about our shared local identity with the unflinching eye of a surgeon / historian across ten emotionally searing tracks. "Stitched together in a Frankenstein's monster kind of way", Country Justice revamps the folk tradition of murder ballads with industrial sonics derived from hardware electronics, while collaged sample snippets and field recordings situate these works specifically within an Aotearoa context — conjuring the ghosts of The Skeptics on reworked title track 'Country Justice X'.

An uneasy experience challenging listeners' preconceptions (politically and sonically), the fiercely ambitious and immaculately executed Country Justice is a standout local release highlight of 2023.  Featuring contributions from Imogen Taylor, Cello Forrester (Womb, CRUSH), Nisha Madhan, Abigail Aroha Jensen, and the late Angus Zoë Tahere Hayes, the album launches today with a limited series of fine art prints titled HEADLESS, made in collaboration with PICTVRE and Crystal Lim — plus a long-sleeved t-shirt featuring a print by Abigail Aroha Jensen (order HERE). Celebrating their album's launch at The Wine Cellar with Hasji, i.e. crazy shared the following content warning about this Saturday's show...

"Certain elements of the i.e. crazy set explore the representation of gender-based violence in NZ's media & social imagination. There will be a couple of brief references to historic media narratives covering stories of gender-based violence & suicide that are, in some cases, specific to Aotearoa. They are not prolonged or (by our read) gratuitous & we hope serve to highlight issues that pervade this country's culture of violence, rather than exploit them.

Verbal and visual warning of this content will be given before the show commences. While we will do our best to guide you safely through the set, you are welcome to leave at anytime. A selection of contacts for crisis support services is listed at the end of this press release & will also be available at the door of the show. If you or someone you know would like assistance in contacting these services or getting home safely, please reach out either to the performer, the person at the door, or someone you trust."
