Troy Kingi Announces 'Time Wasters...' Album Release Tour

Jetting out of the '80s phase of his 2022 album Year of the Ratbags and Their Musty Theme Songs, Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) has revealed the dreamy next instalment of his Taite Music Prize-winning 10 10 10 Series. Breezing past previously explored genres of blues, roots, psychedelic funk and folk towards an “ambient instrumental vibe," Kingi's seventh album Time Wasters: Soundtrack to Current Day Meanderings will be out in full on 17th November (pre-save HERE) — a new era beginning with lead single 'Bastards' out on 21st October. An instrumental interlude that lifted the singer out of loathing the limits of his vocal range (see Kingi's words below), the tongue-twistingly titled new record was produced by TeMatera Smith (Albi & The Wolves).

Troy Kingi's latest group The Room Service feature throughout, including Treye Liu, Marika Hodgson, Guy Harrison, Greg Haver, Forrest Thorpe, Thabani Gapara and Kingi’s 9 year old daughter Āio on the bonus track. The carrot town of Ohakune just caught Kingi at their Blues and Roots Festival and he will soon be on an album release tour with The Room Service at Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi and Te-Whanganui-a-Tara. "Time Wasters was a response to a lot of soundtrack work I’d been doing around the time, short film, tv and feature film score work.I’ve always been intrigued by the way music can accentuate a tone, a mood or a feeling in a film and more often than not without vocals. I suppose it did help that I was listening to a lot of Surprise Chef, Skinshape, Hermanos Gutierrez, Khruangbin and foreign language music — it just kinda worked its way into my songs.

An instrumental album was never really on the cards at the beginning of the 10/10/10 journey but lately I’ve actually been feeling alienated by my own voice, it’s just the older I get, the more my voice is changing, and honestly I feel for the worse. So I thought what better way to get myself out of the self loathing vocal dump and rejuvenate the creative spices than to just stop singing and let the music speak for itself"
