Listen To Troy Kingi's New Album 'Time Wasters: Soundtrack to Current Day Meanderings'

Aotearoa’s wandering ranger of the genre mountains Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) has reached instrumental peaks with Time Wasters: Soundtrack to Current Day Meanderings, the seventh instalment of his award winning 10 10 10 Series. Produced by TeMatera Smith (Albi & The Wolves), the “mind-bending, time-wasting games and puzzles” of Kingi's latest collection is a primarily all-instrumental rollercoaster that speaks for and beyond itself. Experience the funk-filled brass highway of ‘Fantasy League’, transcendent falsetto backing of ‘Happy Colour’ and Khruangbin-like guitar and bass of ‘Rubix’ and ‘Sudoku’. On my road trip repeat is ‘Link Link Link’ and the building percussion of ‘Sequence’. Kingi’s nine year old daughter Āio closes the album with her beautifully delicate vocals to the powdered-sugar waltz of bonus track ‘Krispy Kreme’.

The supergroup The Room Service features throughout Time Wasters…, including drummers Treye Liu and Greg Haver, bassist Marika Hodgson, keys player Guy Harrison, trumpeter Forrest Thorpe and saxophonist Thabani Gapara. Having seen the latter two musicians perform live myself, gigs from this classy collective is a must-attend. The Room Service and Kingi will play a three-stop album release tour in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi and Te-Whanganui-a-Tara, with special guests Hudge, Craigslist, and Dan Akido from next Thursday. Kingi will also be headlining the fast approaching Hawke's Bay Outfield Festival next year. Waste your time away with reckless abandon—head along to these gigs now…

"Time Wasters was a response to a lot of soundtrack work I'd been doing around the time, short film, TV and feature film score work. I've always been intrigued by the way music can accentuate a tone, a mood or a feeling in a film and more often than not without vocals. I suppose it did help that I was listening to a lot of Surprise Chef, Skinshape, Hermanos Gutierrez, Khruangbin and foreign language music - it just kinda worked its way into my songs. An instrumental album was never really on the cards at the beginning of the 10/10/10 journey but lately I've actually been feeling alienated by my own voice, it's just the older I get, the more my voice is changing, and honestly I feel for the worse. So I thought what better way to get myself out of the self loathing vocal dump and rejuvenate the creative spices than to just stop singing and let the music speak for itself."
