Listen To A Crude Mechanical's Debut Album 'Discourse'

Chris Cudby / Friday 17th November, 2023 12:31PM

Tāmaki Makaurau's Shane Warbrooke (formerly of The Bemsha Swing, 1000 and Climate Change) has reemerged with the panoramic multi-instrumental vistas of A Crude Mechanical's debut album Discourse. Swirling together textures from post-rock to shoegaze to dreamy new age ambience, all driven along by Warbrooke's trusty rhythm box, the eight tracks on Discourse feel meditative yet bracingly adventurous in execution. Seven minute second number 'Another Destroyer Of Words' provides a case study of Discourse's tonal range — moving from delicate keys, haunting bowed strings and crisp beat-scapes to scorchingly dramatic guitar flurries, in an assured manner calling to mind ECM guitarist / composer Steve Tibbetts. Out today on limited edition 12" recycled vinyl LP available for order HERE, Warbrooke is playing launch event for his solo record this Saturday at The Wine Cellar with fellow sonic traveller Crash Teslas (Thom Burton of Guardian Singles). Hit play on the just unveiled visuals for 'All We Need Is' and listen below...

"To me it feels fairly trip hop, with more trip and more hop, some shoegaze, and I've started listening to the unpopular Sonic Youth albums instead of the popular ones.

Influence-wise there's a ton of Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and Dave Knudsen (Minus the Bear) in the guitar playing. The composition is inspired by modern classical composers such as Hania Rani, Phillip Glass, and Eydis Evenson. Plus, because I can't help myself, fat beats as well as Mogwai, Mars Volta, Radiohead and Daughters.

It's serious music for unserious people; high art theory mixed with bits of fun, like house beats."
