Sunn O))) and Pelican Announce October Tour

Wednesday 22nd August, 2012 9:19AM

Following closely on the heels of their idols Earth, cloak wearing doom metallers Sun O))) have announced two New Zealand shows in October.  Chicago post-rockers/metallers Pelican will be joing them and together they'll play shows in Auckland and Wellington...

RW Entertainment and Undertheradar Proudly Present:

Friday 19th October, The Kings Arms, Auckland
Saturday 20th October, Bodega, Wellington

Tickets on sale 9am Monday 27th August from here at UTR, Real Groovy in Auckland and Slow Boat in Wellington

Here's what you can expect from Sun O)))

And here's a Pelican track 'Autumn Into Summer' from The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (2005).

Press Release:

Seldom is the frequency with which gut-wrenching, evisceral heaviness and considered, refined musicianship and sheer virtuosity in songcraft are evenly mastered in equal doses in the same musical project. Less frequently still is such balance achieved in two musical projects, and it is with extreme rarity that two such forces combine to publicly demonstrate their respective unions of sonic extremity and proficiency on the same tour. Uncommon though such a prospect it is, October of 2012 sees it transpire on New Zealand soil when the doom-laden experimentalism, ambience and sludge of SUNN O))) and PELICAN arrive to shatter eardrums along with any preconceptions about the boundaries arbitrarily set in music performance.

The SUNN 0))) mission is to create trance-like soundscapes with the ultimate low end/bottom frequencies intended to massage the listeners' intenstines into acts of defecation. During their elusive live performances, the band have succesfully made audience members instantly nauseous and running for the toilet in terror with their all-out subterranean aural assaults. With over 25 official recordings (including 2009's acclaimed Monoliths and Dimensions) and numerous collaborations with the industry's most left-of-centre musical geniuses, Sunn O)))'s resume speaks volumes to the intensity of their craft and the high regard in which their work is held.

PELICAN represent a pastiche of genre-defying sound; simultaneously cohesive and expansive in influence. Yet they have refined their own sound over the course of their career; constantly refining their experiments in crushing heaviness, albeit a kind melodically and compositionally a breed apart from their contemporaries. However, growth isn't only musical; it's also philosophical. Extensive touring has tightened bonds and intensified the creative niche that Pelican has created, and their latest offering - 2012's Ataraxia/Taraxis EP - doesn't depict a shift as much as it exemplifies maturation. Though they have always reveled in textured progressions, their latest showcases more twists and unexpected turns from a band whose only predictable element is their sheer unpredictability.

These landmark performances will not be for the faint of heart or the novice-like of ear, and will be less a straightforward musical performance in a sweaty club than a truly numinous, transcendental experience set to soundtracks that will be simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. Prepare yourselves for a true test of the limits of music.
