Howling Bells Return To New Zealand For One-Off Show

Monday 30th June, 2014 9:14AM

London-based indie outfit Howling Bells are returning to New Zealand for the first time since 2006 for a one-off show in September. The four-piece was originally founded in Sydney in 2005, but relocated to England, where they developed their sound into a blend of dark ambient electronica scattered with Americana influences. Howling Bells' upcoming tour to the Southern Hemisphere follows last month's release of their fourth studio album Heartstrings. Here's the  details for their Auckland show...

PRESS RELEASE:

Vector Arena by arrangement with Artist Voice are proud to announce the return of bohemian rock'n’roll outfit Howling Bells to New Zealand to play at The Tuning Fork on Saturday 13th September. In support of their recently released fourth album, Heartstrings, the band return for the first time since 2006.

“Like their fellow Australian Nick Cave, Howling Bells’ music lives on dirty plains and in lonely churchyards, weaving pre-dawn paranoia into a woozy tapestry of sex and death. And Juanita’s extraordinary voice curls around the haunting guitar lines like cigarette smoke. – NME

“fearless vocals and beautifully put-together instrumentation”
- Drowned In Sound

Formed in Sydney 2005, Howling Bells relocated to London where they filled their sound with elements of Americana, ambient electronica and their deliciously dark brand of lyrics. They combine the honeyed vocals of front woman, Juanita Stein, lo-fi riffs from guitarist-brother Joel and the chest-banging beats of drummer Glenn Moule, all galvanised by the recent addition of London-born and bred bass player, Gary Daines.

June 2014 saw Howling Bells return with their stunning new album ‘Heartstrings’, recorded at London’s Assault and Battery Studios, with producers Catherine J Marks (Foals, PJ Harvey, The Vaccines) and Alan Moulder (Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Killers, My Bloody Valentine and Depeche Mode).

Howling Bells have always been a hard-touring band, and arena supports with The Killers and Coldplay and tours with Elbow, Editors and Placebo only heightened their enthusiasm for reaching out to their audience, “I’m desperate to tour and connect with an audience again – there’s no way for an artist to gauge people’s reactions to a song unless you’re playing them live,” says front woman Juanita. “Twitter’s not gonna do it, Facebook’s not gonna do it, online comments aren’t gonna do it. I need to feel them.”
