MediaWorks Announce The Closure Of Kiwi FM

Friday 20th March, 2015 11:40AM

MediaWorks, the company that owns Kiwi FM, have announced the station will be closing at the end of the month. Kiwi FM has been on the airwaves a decade, after being launched on Waitangi Day 2005 as a station playing 100% New Zealand music. In recent years the ratio shifted to cover 70% local music and 30% international artists.

Group content director for MediaWorks, Leon Wratt says the station is proud of what it has achieved in expanding the reach for New Zealand music. "There are now more options than ever to listen to home grown music, and it is time for us to focus on other priorities," he said. That includes the focussing on expanding sister stations George FM and Mai FM.

The last day of broadcast for Kiwi Fm is 31st March, after which the Auckland (102.2), Wellington (102.1) and Christchurch (102.5) frequencies will return to the Crown.
