MediaWorks Announce The Closure Of Kiwi FM

Friday 20th March, 2015 11:40AM

MediaWorks, the company that owns Kiwi FM, have announced the station will be closing at the end of the month. Kiwi FM has been on the airwaves a decade, after being launched on Waitangi Day 2005 as a station playing 100% New Zealand music. In recent years the ratio shifted to cover 70% local music and 30% international artists.

Group content director for MediaWorks, Leon Wratt says the station is proud of what it has achieved in expanding the reach for New Zealand music. "There are now more options than ever to listen to home grown music, and it is time for us to focus on other priorities," he said. That includes the focussing on expanding sister stations George FM and Mai FM.

The last day of broadcast for Kiwi Fm is 31st March, after which the Auckland (102.2), Wellington (102.1) and Christchurch (102.5) frequencies will return to the Crown.

I am genuinely so sad this has happened. The best music and best station. Only one I ever listen too. Sad day for NZ.

I feel so UTTERLY DEVO about this. There is sadness every morning when I drive to work and then again whenever I automatically hit the preset Kiwi station to find white noise. SO SAD :( loved you Kiwi FM

I just read they are replacing it with "Magic FM," targeting the 50-69 age group by playing oldies. How original. Well, I'm 50 in a few weeks, and I want no part of that crap. I like being constantly introduced to excellent new music that, apart from Kiwi FM and university stations that lack range to reach me, isn't found anywhere on radio, at least not in Wellington as far as I can hear. Without Kiwi FM, I never would have been turned on to the Leers, Princess Chelsea, Bond Street Bridge, the Checks, Rodi Kirk, plus international artists like the Foals and Johnny Maar. Who else plays any of this?

Kiwi FM was the only radio station I listened to. Charlotte Ryan was just a delight and the music was great. Bad call, MediaWorks.
