Ryan Adams, who grabbed worldwide headlines this week with his cat rescuing efforts in Symonds Street Cemetery, played the first of two New Zealand shows last night at the Auckland Town Hall. Supported by his backing band The Shining, consisting of guitarist Mike Viola, bassist Charlie Stavis, drummer Freddie Bokkenheuser and keyboardist Daniel Clarke, the American alt-country star worked through a raft of favourites from albums news and old alike  - from a stage dressed in jumbo-sized speaker stacks and pinball machines.
