Audio Foundation presents a rare performance from Aotearoa’s ground breaking hip-hop progenitors UPPER HUTT POSSE w. support from Auckland art-punkers THE COOLIES!

In their first outing since taking home the prestigious IMNZ Classic Record award at the Taite Music Prize for their 1988 12” ‘E Tu’, UPPER HUTT POSSE will play one show at Auckland’s Wine Cellar!

Since their inception in 1985, Dean Hapeta (also known as D Word or Te Kupu) and the Posse have been fighting racial injustice with musical-revolutionary fervour. Theirs are songs of Aotearoa, which situate ideals of protest and revolution in an explicitly Maori frame of reference. The classic ‘E Tu’ is but one example; UPPER HUTT POSSE deal in songs of conscience, songs which ring true to this day, sung to all those who see the need for change.

This performance is presented in relation to Te Kupu’s exhibition ’Nga tahi - Know the Links’ which opens at 5.30pm on Thursday 4 August at Audio Foundation.

“Nga tahi - Know The Links” is a Six part Rapumentary on Street Arts and Activism amongst Native and Marginalised people in Twenty-Two countries
