Fun With Knives
About Fun With Knives from Auckland
Borne from an appreciation of beauty and some beats, harmony and how to get the best out of your musical brain.
They skip around elements of rock and jazz fusion, underpinned with strong, often European and funk-flavoured rhythmic backbones, with inventive lush vocal melodies. Influences include groups such as Miso (Aus), Oi Va Voi (UK), the Cinematic Orchestra (UK), locals such as Minuit, James Wilkinson, Pyramid Scheme, anything fresh and original, and NZ labels such as Monkey records. Their live shows are atmospheric and sometimes intense, often alternating between walls of layered sound and rhythm, and more languid musical imagery.
Members;
Ben Wood, drums and percussion, random rhythm suggestions and general philosophy (other project are Hikoikoi, Hannah Howes, Lorax, and a lot of other things )
Michaela Manley, Sax, vocals, guitar and various effects (ex Skeleton Crew, random recordings, UK and wellington, and a mongrel ancestry)
Mike Duffy, Bass, strange pedals that go 'wwaap-wapwap-wap' more philosophy and general goodwill (other projects are Zirigidum, and.. too many to recall right now!)
Come. We promise ingenuity, conversation and a general celebration of music. x
