The Secret Lunch
About The Secret Lunch from Christchurch
THE SECRET LUNCH PERFORM AT FAIRFIELD HOUSE FRIDAY 15 JANUARY
New Zealand could possibly consider steeling itself for the gentle onslaught of one of Australia's most luminous and slyly humorous musical acts when The Secret Lunch perform on Saturday January 16. The trio features the songs of Christchurch-born and Melbourne resident Double Bass player/songwriter Stephen Taberner, best known in Australia and the UK as the creative force behind the wildly successful Spooky Men's Chorale, and also well known in New Zealand as a choirleader and singing workshop guru.
Stephen's original songs in this incarnation recline in the magnificent musical sofa consisting of his own brooding and tasty double bass work, plus the judicious application of guitar legend Sam King, who attends to his axe with the diabolical intensity of a street fighter on death row, and Emma Kelly, who plays violin with the aching tunefulness and purity of the angels waiting to receive him.....not to mention the drop dead gorgeous singing of the pair of 'em...
The musical world created is thus at once musically mesmerising and prone to sending one on utterly diverting mind tangents, whether if be regarding the subleties of love lost or not wanted, the advisability of a pre-nuptial apology, or the bittersweet fantasy of one's own funeral. It is not lightweight, nor is it danceable, mostly, or much good for talking over. however it responds uncannily well to that most gloriously time and sofa consuming of practices, listening.....
This trio have performed to sweet and deadly effect at the National Folk Festival, Yackandandah Folk Festival and the Blue Mountains Folk Festival, and in numerous small and tasty venues down the east coast of Australia, and doubtless, will continue to do so.
“small intimate truths presented without pretense but with considerable artistry. His unassuming but compelling voice soars over quirkily imaginative accoustic backdrops....it’s like gatecrashing someone else’s dreams”-John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald Metro
