Josephine Costain

Josephine Costain

About Josephine Costain from Auckland

My music is artistic and diverse.
With heartfelt emotions, I tell stories interchanging styles and grooves.

I have been writing, recording and performing as a professional musician for a decade, songwriting for twenty years and performing in public since I was nine years old.

Formerly the lead singer in the band Ishta, my voice has been described as, "heavenly, soulful and sensual". Graham Reid The NZ Herald in 2006.

Originally from Melbourne, I have a mixed heritage: Greek, Maori (Te Ati-Hau-nui-a-paparangi), English and Irish.

I have collaborated with a number of producers, musicians and choreographers including Russel Walder, Whirimako Black, Nigel Gavin, Epsilon Blue, Edna Katz-Levy, Tom Atkinson, Shinya Asakura, members of Trinity Roots, Little Bushman (to record my own music) and others.

I performed at Splore Art and Music Festival in 2008 and supported Liam Finn for the Splore Living Lounge in 2009.

For the 2009 Auckland Cup and the Telecom Derby, I sang the National Anthem and in September of 2007, I collaborated with Whirimako Black, Nigel Gavin, and visual artist Serena Stevenson for a concert at St Mathews-in-the-city in Auckland, which is available for sale on itunes and at Amplifer music.

In 2004, I recorded a 12-track album that was sold at live performances around Israel where I did a tour that year. Also that year, I was a guest writer and vocalist on drummer/producer Tom Atkinson’s (SJD, Kirsten Morell, Dam Native) solo debut album.

Other albums that I am featured on are; the Monkey Magic Compilation Album 1 & 2 released in 2003 and 2008. In 2002 and sang lead vocals on the single U R a Star produced and written by Epsilon Blue which featured on three different albums: Wahine The Green Room 002 released by Loop Records; the Indie Hits Disc 17 released by New Zealand On Air and on Epsilon Blues 2002 album, 'We Have a Responsibility to Our Shareholders'.

Having recently returned from a tour of the USA where I was studying songwriting in Colorado and at Berklee College of Music in Boston, as well as performing in New York, and San Francisco, I am now working on writing and recording an album. The first single is to be released to coincide with a national tour in March 2010.

I have toured New Zealand several times with the band Ishta and as a solo artist. I have performed at numerous festivals including the Melbourne Fringe Festival, The Auckland Festival, Splore Art & Music Festival, Prana Festival, Kaikoura Roots Festival, the Grey Lynn Festival, Visionz Festival and Ecofest on Waiheke Island.

I have also worked as a model, actor, dancer and performing artist.
For the last nine years, I have been teaching Pilates and Yoga in Auckland. (Go to www.pilateswithjosephine.co.nz for more info)
