Daniel Madill
About Daniel Madill from Auckland
I'm originally from Dunedin and I was raised on a diet of blues, folk and 60s rock n roll. In my early twenties I played in local Dunedin bands 'Zen Cortex' and 'Speedy'. 'Zen Cortex' was a seven piece, dark indie surf rock meets jazz type deal. There was even a bit of a classical music influence. 'Speedy' was a straight up 3 piece garage rock band. 'Zen Cortex' developed a local cult following and played at 'The Gathering', for those who remember that festival. 'Speedy' had a single called 'On the Road', which played on student radio in Dunedin. While continuing to listen to, write and record music at home, I took a break from professional music to complete a degree in Anthropology. Now based in Auckland, I have performed my current material at the Queen Street 'Borders' Bookstore during New Zealand Music Week. In December last year I opened for the very talented 'Mimsy Cable and the Family Tree' along with 'Panther and The Zoo' at The Wine Cellar Bar. I have also performed at a number of open mic nights. The music I am now creating is largely a return to my Folk and Blues roots. While I guess it can be classed in the Singer/songwriter genre, I like to think theres a bit of 'Funkadellic' funkiness in there at times, along with a garage rock/punk edge.
