About Chicane from Auckland
The band began back in 1994 and they have moved through many phases of
activity and inactivity since then, often on the verge of imploding, but
ultimately forging ahead with the much-loved passion for being in the same room
together and making music on the spot.
For the love of it.
Seven
tracks are presented here, all of which - bar one - were recorded in an extended
session of activity at Earwig Studios in Birkenhead, Auckland. The recordings
are challenging and fresh, in that they are set down live with minimal overdubs
and in many cases are first or second takes. What you hear is the raw ssence
Chicane wished to transmit.
‘Dead Star’ is the odd one out, recorded at
the Lab tudios with Chris van de Geer a few years back. It still shines with
excellant hooks and makes an ntriguing counterpoint midway through the disc to
demonstrate the distance the band has travelled from heir structured song
beginnings to the stretched out leanings of recent times.
Other tracks
like ‘Jet A-1’ and ‘Are You On Board’ rise from a slowburn to tempered fury,
giving the listener a sense of movement and dynamics that isn’t found in a lot
of music these days. ‘Satellite Swings’ exists in it’s own own orbit, featuring
fluid vocals and weightless guitar lines, before diving into a direct trajectory
bound for the ground.
Four people in a room, performing & recording
music together - you can’t beat that feeling of discovery, of joyfulness. Long
may it run
