About The Coolies from Auckland
Living on a punk rock recipe of desperation and distortion, the coolies, three girls hailing from South Auckland redefining what noise means within punk. The Dead Boys and The Shangri-Las are the band’s point of reference, suggesting the contradiction behind their music: both sickly sweet epic heartbreak sound track, and nihilistic dance noise punk. Erratically swinging between dance beats and sonic attacks it’s hard to resist or deny the sound though constantly evolving is unequivocally their own. Jarring guitars drive the songs straight fo’ yr jaw while distorted angular stabs from the Casio 101 keep systems ablaze backed up by the sparse, intense pummel of the drum kit. Inspired in there early teens by bands like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, X-ray Spex and Black Flag bands with a message, a purpose thus inspired the direction they’ve taken. It’s seen the coolies play along side bands like BRMC, Peaches, Beastie Boys, Cat Power, Rancid, Big Day Out Festivals, J. Mascis, Coachwhips, Kinski, John Wilkes Booze and many more.
