About Kib Simpson from Christchurch
Kib Simpson is a singer/songwriter from Christchurch... this soulful young woman wields a voice that lingers in your head long after the singer has left the stage. Her sophisticated song-craft and unique sound creates an irresistible magnetism.
The music industry always talks up ‘overnight success stories’ but usually there’s years, sometimes decades of graft behind the scenes. Kib Simpson is no exception. She completed her apprenticeship in the 1990’s as the lead singer for Bristol-based band Mellow Statics. They played the much-vaunted English ‘festival season’ and released the single, Champagne Rain, penned by Simpson. Reviewers compared her band to Massive Attack and Portishead, and raved about her ‘extraordinary and versatile’ voice. (Evening Standard, UK)
The Mellow Statics were signed to a management company and offered a recording contract, but the deal wasn’t consummated and the band split up. Upon returning home to New Zealand, Simpson was determined to not let this bump in the road disrupt her passion and career.
She decided to clear her head with a classic Kiwi road-trip. ‘It was the middle of winter. I had no plans, just the long road south and a need to be alone and in tune with something greater than me.’ As she drove, the songs started coming again. The process, she says, still amazes her. ‘I never plan – they just write themselves.’
Simpson became a fixture on the South Island music circuit, becoming world famous in Te Anau in the summer of 2004. She supported Paul Ubana Jones on his 2006 tour. Last year she recorded with Ben Campbell and Sean Cunningham of Atlas fame. Finally, after creating a rolling buzz and a growing fan-base, Simpson is ready to showcase her latest offerings.
Kib Simpson is the sound of summer.
