Puppet initially formed in May 2004 with all members having previously been in Tacit, an Auckland based band that chose to change its name to prevent any possible confusion or conflict with an established International band using the same name.

The band have gigged extensively around Auckland with some rare excursions to Te Awamutu (March 2005), Silverdale for FarmFest (April 2006) and Mangawhai Tavern (March 2007) as well as shows for North Shore Sounds, Emergenza Festival and several live-in-studio appearances on KiwiFM.
