Atsushi And The Moisties

Atsushi And The Moisties

About Atsushi And The Moisties from Auckland

"Atsushi & the Moisties" are an Auckland based band playing authentic ska and reggae music inspired by the 1960's+70's Jamaican style. Their influences include The Skatalites, Maytals, Heptones, Lyn Taitt and Harry J All Stars. With no vocals, their three piece horn section leads the melody in their all- instrumental tracks, which makes the Moisties sound unique.

Founder of the band, Atsushi (aka "Moisty"), is a re-inventor of New Zealand ska. Atsushi started the Moisties as a solo side project in 2003, with the intention to create unique traditional ska and reggae music that is great to listen to. Atsushi created his first solo ep in 2006, and formed Atsushi and the Moisties later that same year. The band debuted in 2007 at Auckland's annual SKA-B-Q, sharing the stage with well-known acts including The Managers and The Offbeats.

Since then the Moisties has actively appeared in public.  They have performed at venues including the Kings Arms, Khuja Lounge and Galatos Basement, as well as numerous house parties and private functions throughout the North Island. They performed again at SKA-B-Q in 2008 and 2009, One Drop Beats All reggae festival (Whangarei), Toots and Grooves Ska Fest (Levin) and Brewers Bar (Tauranga). The band has bulit a solid positive reputation through many gigs over the years. To prove this point, in the end of 2009 the band got the highest voting for Win an Opening Slot at the Big Day Out which is the biggest music festival in New Zealand. Future plans include performances with a guest vocalist from the States, and shows in Melbourne and Sydney in 2010.

Also they have been on TV and radio. New Zealand most famous reggae dj, DJ Dubhead enjoys playing Atsushi & the Moisties on his programme. Hamilton radio show, Go Feet Radio featured Moisty's interview in 2009. The band worked with ALT TV. They even played live on air as part of the show's anibersary. Now New Zealand national television, TV One is interested in the band to interview and film some live shows.

Jah TIGER is an integral part of "Atsushi & the Moisties" stage performance. A tiger is featured in the band's logo and Moisty sports a stylish tiger costume onstage. An unusual and memorable part of the live show, Jah Tiger rocks some serious bling, and can jump around and play the guitar balancing on a bar stool!

The uniqueness of the band lies not only in Jah tiger, the songs or the live performance.  One item of Moisties' merchandise has taken on a life of its own.  Atsushi & the Moisties panties sell out continuously, keeping the fans moisty.  New merchandise includes funky girls singlets featuring the band logo and catchy phrase "I'm a Moisties' sweet ass bitch!"  (If you are not kinky or cool enough, they also have their Sound of the Ska EP and standard band t-shirts for sale).
