Mobile Stud Unit (msu)
About Mobile Stud Unit (msu) from Hamilton
MSU is something of a Hamilton icon, achieving both a cult and legendary status amongst Waikato Alumni and further a field.
Known as much for their stage performance as their musical talent, the MSU is New Zealand’s original ‘Pus Rock’ band. Their garb is distasteful, their lyrics laced with heavy sardonic wit, their onstage antics and audience banter vibrant and captivating, their sound varied but predominantly driven by catchy punk riffs.
The band has independently released three albums; feature on soundtracks of a feature film and several documentaries, a number of NZ compilation cds and NZ on Air Indie Hitdiscs.
They have played alongside, supported (and/or sometimes feuded with) a number of international and popular national acts including: The Living End, Shihad, Head Like a Hole, Lucksmiths, The Exponents, The Datsuns and The Muttonbirds.
In addition MSU has completed three nationwide tours, had six Number 1 hits on student radio stations, bNet and Real Groove award nominations (for cover art), and played at bFM summer series.
The MSU's 15 years of service to NZ music rates mention in Gareth Shute’s latest book ‘NZ Rock: 1987-2007’.
MSU leaves behind a legacy of influence on the New Zealand music scene and beyond.
