Q + A with Jeremy from BMX Rapists as part of our MUZAI Records special.

Been around since?

January 2009

Current line up?

Jeremy, Thomas, Sam Cussen, Sam Shephard

Where are you based?

Auckland/Wanganui

What got you into music?

I can't really answer this question. I've played guitar everyday since I was 14 years old. I don't think about it.

How did you get together?

Me and Shephard recorded some songs in his room; really shitty. Then made an EP called "Cocks of The Animal Kingdom" which we handed out a few copies out at Camp A Low Hum. Some people liked it , some people hated it. We thought it could be cool to go on tour with God Bows to Math so we got some friends and made a live band.

How would you describe your sound?

Comedy noise rock. I asked my friend and he said "not good".

What are you listening to at the moment?

Early Modest Mouse.

What is your writing/recording process?

I come up with a bass line and record it onto Sam Shephard's laptop with a guitar but we try make it sound like a bass and then he'll programme a drum beat for it. Then I come up with something on guitar to go over top. Then I figure out some lyrics to sing over top. Then what we do is go "let's have 8 bars of the guitar part then 8 bars of singing" and then put a guitar solo somewhere.

Your Dream Collaboration?

Me + the dude who plays ukulele outside Burger King + the ghost of Darcy Clay + all the girls in Moron Says What + fuck I dont know... this would be the worst band ever.

Do you have any releases our or on the way?

We're recording a album soon. It's called "Jokes". That's all I really know, sorry.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learnt musically in the last year?

That girls get moist when you play a lot of notes in quick succession. I've got my N.P.S (notes per second) up to 500. Last gig I played I surfed out of the venue on my guitar on a wave of p**** juices.

What’s the best concert you have ever been to?

Bang! Bang! Aids! at Whammy Bar. It changed my life. Before that I was in a post-rock band...

Best or most memorable gig you have played?

Our first show. It was at the PR Bar with The Randoms and God Bows To Math. I hadn't slept the previous night because I smoked P for some reason and me and Thom did it as a two piece but didn't practice. We just drove around Auckland, drinking beers and listening to the EP making notes, like "yep, ok, remember to stop playing drums in this part". It was a disaster.

If you could share the stage with anyone (band or person) who would it be?

I don't want to share the stage with anyone.

The future holds…?

How should I know!!
