Pegasus

date
Monday 9th August, 2010 1:19PM

Been around since?

Late 2007

Current line up?

Pete Wujkowski - vocals
Jonathan Dakers - guitar
Mike Hall - guitar
Brendon Kahi - bass
Logan Compain - drums

Where are you based?

Auckland

Musical history?

Pegasus is a collaboration between people from two other bands - Ender and Carthaginian Solution. We came up with the idea of writing songs based on big heavy riffs that would come off really powerfully live, and it all evolved from there.

How would you describe your sound?

Big gratifying riffs

What are you listening to at the moment?

As I write this - The Stand Ins by Okkervil River. Other stuff that's been on high rotation recently is Dead Meadow, Mew, M83, Torche, Fleet Foxes.

What were you listening to at high school?

Drum and Bass, Nu Metal and Prog Rock. Not sure if I'm meant to admit that...

What is your writing/recording process?

I write all the songs and then bring them to the band, and everyone puts their own touches on them. Pete writes all of the lyrics.

Your Dream Collaboration?

That's a really hard question... there are so many great artists I'd love to work with. I'd love to write an album for Bjork to sing on, it probably wouldn't sound much like Pegasus, though.

You’ve just released an EP – for free – tell about this.

When we recorded the EP we really wanted to capture the sound of the band live, so we all set up in the same room, and played everything together. It worked really well for getting good performances down, but bleed between instruments made mixing difficult. The vocals, guitar leads and keyboards were overdubbed afterwards. I recorded and mixed it all myself.

We're releasing it for free because we just want people to hear it, and we're all too busy with other things to play shows in support of the release. Three of the Pegasus guys are in Carthaginian Solution, and they're currently getting songs ready for an album, which I'll be recording. That's due to start in June, so it should be out later this year.

Have you got any other releases out?

This is the first Pegasus release - I've released one album with my Ender project, and Carthaginian Solution have released a four track EP.

Where’s your favourite place to play?

We played a show in January at The Thirsty Dog, the people there were great and the sound was good.

Your favourite show so far?

Our first show in April 2008 was good fun.. our Joy Division cover was destructive.. there is video evidence here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVn8nUhQce4

If you could share the stage with anyone (person or band) who would it be?

Mare

When are you playing next?

As Pegasus - maybe some time in 2010. Carthaginian Solution will be playing live again in a few months, hopefully.

The state of music in NZ is…?
