Collapsing Cities Back for Xmas + win tix

Wednesday 12th November, 2008 12:00PM

NME may have taken Auckland’s Collapsing Cities to their hearts but there is nothing like the warmth of a mother’s bosom for these young lads.

Collapsing Cities are returning for Christmas with their families and to play a series of shows commencing with a homecoming gig at the Kings Arms on 12 December supported by two of Auckland’s hottest acts of the past six months, the Naked & Famous and Body Corporate.

Tickets go on sale here on Friday 14th November

The Kings Arms was the scene of a frenzied Collapsing Cities farewell show in Auckland back in April, packed to the rafters with fans braying the hits from the group’s Elixir Always album.

Collapsing Cities headed to the UK, where in six months they have chalked up almost fifty shows including festival appearances at Reading, Leeds, the Great Escape in Brighton and Lovebox Weekender in London. They also played UK tours with Black Kids, Late Of The Pier and Metronomy, three attention-grabbing acts on their way to NZ shores in the coming months.

Their debut UK single, “Fear Of Opening My Mouth”, was released on the hip London label Way Out West, home of acts like Late of the Pier and Cajun Dance Party. The seven inch vinyl release sold out and was widely played on radio by the likes of Zane Lowe Steve Lamacq, Huw Stevens and XFM.

NME have led the press in reporting the band. Their first live review concentrated on the dark humour of the band’s songs, noting “Flight of the Conchords-style dry wit” in their songs.

By the time of their Reading and Leeds festival appearances, NME was profiling Collapsing Cities as one of their “10 Hopes of the Near Future”.

Other good notices for the group have come in the Times, Guardian, and any number of online outlets from artrocker, drownedinsound, pinglewood, angryape and loud & quiet.

Collapsing Cities return to the UK in February for the release of their next single “Seriously”, which has been remixed by Ed Buller of the Psychedelic Furs.

Competition drawn. Winners have been notified.
