Over the course of 11 albums, even more EP’s and a career spanning a quarter of a century, Throwing Muses have been pioneers in what we now know as “indie” and still remain hugely influential, with echoes of their groundbreaking sound still heard today.

Throwing Muses were the first American act to sign to 4AD, pioneering a singular form of 'alternative rock' years before the term existed. The band was formed in 1983 by step-sisters Kristin Hersh (vocals/guitar) and Tanya Donelly (guitar/vocals), who were both at high school at the time.

Arresting, unsettling and sometimes downright scary, Kristin's work was like nothing in the rock canon to that point, the result of a much-misunderstood bi-polar disorder which caused songs to 'force' themselves upon her, alluding to identity crises and societal disquiet via oblique imagery and textured, tempo-shifting sound. The young band's playing was extraordinary, joining the dots between elliptical post-punk, harmonious folk jangle and rockabilly thunder without ever settling into standard genre patterns.” 4AD.com

Tanya left the band to help Kim Deal form The Breeders before launching her own group Belly; and the Muses continued as a three-piece. Kristen has also enjoyed a hugely successful solo career, releasing several acclaimed albums and EPs as well as fronting the band 50 Foot Wave. The Muses reluctantly disbanded in 1997, before returning with a thrillingly raucous self-titled album, released in March 2003.
