Gigs summary

Don McGlashan hooks up with Arch Hill Recordings for his first solo album “Warm Hand” Don McGlashan is recognised as one of New Zealand’s foremost songwriters, artists and performers. His career spans from the seminal post-pop-punk band Blam Blam Blam, to art experimentalists The Front Lawn, to platinum selling and internationally critically acclaimed band The Mutton Birds. However, Don McGlashan has never - until pretty soon – released an album under his own name. So we are very chuffed to announce the imminent arrival of his first solo album, called “Warm Hand”. “Warm Hand” was mostly tracked by Ed McWilliams (Ed Cake) and Tom Miskin in ‘the barn’ - at Te Papatipu, Bethells Beach. Production on the album has been a joint effort, with Don McGlashan, Sean James Donnelly (SJD) and Ed Cake all involved. The live band – Don McGlashan and the Seven Sisters - comprises Sean James Donnelly (SJD) on bass, John Segovia (Boxcar Guitars) on pedal steel and Chris O’Connor (Cloudboy) on drums. The first single is called “Miracle Sun” and it will be available very soon as a streamed download at www.archhill.co.nz...and on the radio shortly. The album will be released on 1st May 2006.

Punches EP out Monday – release gig this Saturday The Punches duo of Kelly Steven and James Duncan have put together a six track (or is it just six?) taster of their talents, and it hits the stores on Monday. Sharyn Croft of Real Groove writes of the EP - “Stevens’ sounds like rich golden syrup pouring onto the dreamy folk/electronica mix...Every one of the six tracks is a winner” (4/5 STARS) and Reuben Bonner also of Real Groove writes “the debut offering is an absolutely brilliant and wonderful little treasure that should be beheld by all”. The EP contains both of their 95bFM top ten NO.1 tracks - “Four Feet” and “Day By Day”. They are playing their EP release show at TABAC on Saturday 4th March with Phelps and Munro and Coco Solid, from 9.30pm – if you buy the EP on the door for $15 you get into the gig free...the EP will also retail at $14.95.

Luke Buda’s “Special Surprise” Album out April - and Gigs with SJD Yep, as promised the very stylish Luke Buda will be bringing us his ‘Special Surprise’ future pop album very soon...in fact April the 3rd to be exact. The album features a cool dozen tracks, from the “Cosmic Danse” to the “Atomic Romance”, - as one of his Phoenix Foundation bands-mates commented “If Duran Duran had been any good they would have sounded like Luke Buda”. We are particularly excited because Luke has put together a band and will be playing two shows with SJD, on the 1st of April at Bodega in Wellington and 8th of April at the Kings Arms in Auckland.

Grand Prix on LOW HUM tour The LOW HUM traveling road-show is always well worth partaking in – not only do you get two CDs, and a magazine, you get to see at least three really great bands. In this case it is a particularly good selection; Grand Prix are joined by the recommended Conan and the Moccasins and the Whipping Cats...sounds like a smoky bluesy country fest. The tour kicks off in Auckland on 10th March at the Dogs Bollix and travels south from there (full summary in the gigs summary below)

Off to SXSW
Arch Hill is sending off a special envoy to that large music and booze fest called SXSW in Austin Texas in March – the plan is to make friends, sleep on couches, hear good music, make some more friends, hear some more music and live to tell the tale.
